The Shul of Congregation B'nai Jacob in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, dedicated on August 14, 1927, with a meeting hall adjacent to the synagogue. The "Fairmount Street" Shul as it would also be known as, was an Orthodox Shul.
From the Los Angeles City Directories, we find the following Rabbis leading the Congregation: AB Goldberger (1930, although the congregation's address was listed as 800 N. Evergreen), Moses Kohm (1932), and Henach Singer (1938, 1942).
The Shul, as the rest of the Boyle Heights area, saw a decline in the Jewish population after World War II. Jewish Veterans came back from the war and with opportunities elsewhere, began migrating from the area. With the freedom to be able to buy a home in areas formerly restricted but now free to "minority" buyers per the Shelley Vs. Kraemer 1948 Supreme Court Decision, the Jewish population migrated to other areas in Southern California until the area's synagogues, including B'nai Jacob, would see only its elderly attend services there.
In 1979, the shul was sold to "Iglesia Israelita Casa de Dios", with the condition that the name "B'nai Jacob" remained on the building. The shul is currently used for religious services, primarily on the Shabbat and the days of the three annual feasts for which the Eternal requires all to present before Him.
Today, B'nai Jacob serves as a reminder of the Jewish Heritage in Boyle Heights, while serving as an active place of worship with services still held on the Shabbat.
